Purpose of the Lectures

UST looks forward to working closely with other institutions to promote academic research and encourage the pursuit of excellence. We hope to pay more attention to imbuing the next generation of scientists with a sense of honesty and integrity. Thus we have utilized funds made available by the Hsinyi Housing Agency to set up the Hsinyi Honorary Lecture Series, inviting scholars with an international reputation or special academic achievement s to participate in these lectures and research efforts at the four schools of UST.

First Honorary Lecturer

Andrew Huang graduated from National Taiwan University College of Medicine in 1964 and attended the teaching hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1966 for residency training in internal medicine, after which he underwent specialized training in blood and oncology studies at Duke University Hospital. He taught at the Duke University School of Medicine Internal Medicine beginning in 1969. He is also former clinical director of the Duke University Cancer Center and a visiting physician in cancer prevention and a member of the Committee on Diagnosis and Treatment with the American Cancer Society. Huang returned to Taiwan in 1989, and from 1993 to 1995 served as president of the Cancer Society of the Republic of China.

He is currently a professor of internal medicine at the Duke University Medical Center and director of the Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center. He is also chairman of the Andrew Huang Medical Education Foundation and a member of the Medical Evaluation Committee at National Taiwan University College of Medicine. His areas of research include swelling, hematology, immunology, molecular biology and cancer genetics.

Chao-han Liu, Vice president of Academia Sinica

Chao-han Liu (b. January 3, 1939), is a native of Hengyang in Hu-nan Province. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University, and received a Ph.D in mechanical engineering from Brown University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers at Academia Sinica and was formerly Vice-president of Academia Sinica. Central Research Institute. He is the older brother of former Premier Liu Chao-hsuan and TECO Electric & Machinery chairman C.K. Liu,
